NRS Relief's Viva Eco Tent: A Sustainable Humanitarian Shelter

In November 2024, humanitarian-shelter manufacturer NRS Relief introduced the Viva Eco Tent at Geneva’s AIDEX exhibition. The Viva Eco Tent is built from an “eco-design” tarpaulin containing 15% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a tough fabric that is fully recyclable and supports a circular economy. This lightweight polyethylene weave is strong, water-resistant, UV-stabilized and fire-retardant, ensuring the tent can withstand harsh climates. NRS Relief engineered the shelter for extended use: it can last up to 50% longer than standard relief tents, which reduces replacement needs, carbon footprint, and waste. The 23 m² interior comfortably houses five people (meeting humanitarian space standards) and includes an integrated inner tent with a built-in floorsheet. This design improves insulation and moisture management, even allowing the safe use of a stove inside. Importantly, NRS Relief plans for a second life for the Viva’s components: spent tent poles can be reused as farming stakes, the tarpaulin as groundcover or insulation, and small parts repurposed for essential supplies. The Viva Eco Tent exemplifies how new materials and sustainable design are being applied even in emergency shelters – balancing durability, environmental impact, and user comfort in the tent manufacturing industry.
